I'm afraid I am unable to accept your invitation as I am just too busy with work, school, and with the driving practice. Do you fancy visiting my family instead? We have some traditions which you probably haven't heard of. The main tradition in Hungary when we celebrate Easter is the girls paint eggs in all kinds of different colours and the boys go and "water" them with perfume. What do you think? Would you like to come and visit us sometime? I look forward to your reply. Take care, Gábor StB: 8: Reading: 1: 1: This image shows two people using phones and tablets. What do they celebrate? What do people do?: I know of one certain festival in my town. It's about light and rave parties. We have three big cooling towers next to the old coal power plant in the industrial part of town and every year there's an enormous "light festival" there. There are two types of people who come to the festival. The artistic types whom only come to look at the lighting (different event), and the ones whom only come to get incredibly drunk and have fun at the rave party. 2: Do you enjoy festivals? Why?/Why not?: I do not enjoy festivals as most in my area are in the town centre, where I live so I can hear literally everything when they blast the music out of their stupid hundreds of kilowatts amplifiers and speakers. The first picture shows terraced houses meanwhile the second picture shows blocks of flats in all kinds of different colours. The first similarity is that both are made to house people and families. The second similarity is that usually one family lives in each designated place (such as a house and a flat). The third similarity is that both picures show modern buildings. The first difference is that the blocks of flats are way more economically viable to build. The second difference is that the terraced houses are usually way more isolated from each other, so there isn't as much noise pollution as there is in a block of flats. The third difference is that the houses in the first picture are in the suburbs, which means that you need a car to live there, but blocks of flats are usually built inside cities and towns, and are closer to shops, markets, and the like. 2: 1: A flat is closer to most modern necessities, but a house is way cozier. 2: iunno 3: I'd prefer to live in a flat in a city's (or town's) centre. 3: 1: In my opinion, the most important thing to consider whenever you're choosing a place to live is the location. 2: If the your new home isn't fully furnished, then moving all the furniture is certainly a hassle. Students should spend more time with these classes since it helps them in the long-term. 2: School discipline tells a lot about a perticular student's attitude regarding studying and life in general. If one's school discipline is not up-to-standards, then they may be expelled or worse. It may also help or hinder other students' progress or them making any progress. 3: In my opinion, the most important school tradition is the "ballagás", which is a certain event where the classes which have finished their studies at their school, and they have a special ceremony. 4: Well, in my case it didn't help me develop social skills at all, well not in a way which helps me connect with my "peers" or generation. Usually "normal" pupils can easily connect with each other, but bullying and social isolation run rampant in primary and secondary schools. So in a way it helps certain students to become indifferent to any outside interaction, meanwhile the ones whom are socially respected are on a slippery slope to become the worst people you've ever met. 5: I am currently not planning to revise for the Hungarian matura exam. I may haphazardly change my mind in the last second and start cramming for the history and literature exams. The technique which works for me is physically being in class and listening. But I may obviously can not do that right before my exams. 6: To be honest, I do not know which university courses and departments are the most popular here. But I do have a faint idea of what they might be. Usually STEM-related courses and departments have the most amount of applicants in a year. In my definition STEM includes healthcare et. al. But there are still many secondary school graduates whom are interested in art and music. There are also universities and conservatories which may be perfect for them. The popularity of STEM and healthcare courses and the like in Hungary are proportional to the amount of undergraduates leaving the country, since even with an EE or some other kind of engineering degree they may find a highly respected and well-paying job somewhere else in the EU. 35/3: 1: course advisor 2: intial payment 3: in finance 4: competitive fit 5: local press 6: village hall 7: print making 8: necklace silver 105/2: 1: better grades 2: suddenly changes 3: research subjects 4: using libraries 5: very limiting, not enough 6: conducted surveys 7: examination mark 8: exam papers 9: good memory 37/3: This picture shows a girl sitting on presumably her own bed and reading her notes. She has a pen in her hand so maybe she's underlining the important parts of her notes which may need more time for her to memorise those parts. Meanwhile the second picture shows a group of students outside their campus. They are seen revising for their exam. This way of revising for an exam is better in my opinion than the previous way of revising, since one may ask another to help them with it. The third picture shows a notebook, with certain words and the start of paragraphs highlighted. This way might help with associating words and colours and/or the structure of their notes. The latter two ways of revising are the ones which I would choose if I had to. Asking someone else while revising and highlighting the necessary pieces of text would definitely help the person revising. How could it be even more developed? How would you make your region with tourists? A: In my opinion, tourism in my area is mostly hikers and other people who do sport. In my region (<30km circle) there aren't many interesting sights to see. Well I do know of one tower which is seasonal, but other than that, I don't think there are any other great things to visit. I don't think other types of tourists would enjoy this region. This place is mostly full of hills and forests. People who don't like nature shan't come here in my opinion. Q: Have you traveled to different regions in Hungary? Why? Who? Were they like how you expected? What would you like to visit? A: I have. My mum and I usually travel to Borsod to visit my father's and grandmother's grave. The trip there is 6 hours, but it takes us on motorways, winding roads on hills, beautiful forests. The town(s) where we were going to are like what I expected since I go there almost every year. Q: "Tourism is terrible and shouldn't exist", do you agree and why or why not? A: In my opinion, tourism is a double-edged sword. It does boost the economy of the region where tourists go, but tourists mostly go to places where the attractions usually are. The "terrible effects" of tourism are usually the tourists themselves. Q: How do you travel? Do you take a lot of things with you? Do you plan in advance? Explain. A: I usually travel by plane. Most of the time I go on "budget" airlines because they are the ones flying to Birmingham from Budapest. I usually only bring some clothes, phone, and wallet. I usually go with the flow. I do plan my way to the airport, but after I arrive I don't really think about what to do. Q: "If we were meant to stay in one place, we would have roots instead of feet." Do you agree? Why or why not? A: I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. One may move anywhere they want, and one should not live their life without seeing this world's beauty. 2: "Low-cost airlines do more harm than good." In my opinion, this statement is true. Enviromentally they pollute the earth like hell, and any upsides still don't outweigh this fact. But, it does help people to visit family. And obviously, they don't break the bank. Obviously, that makes us have to decide if we value our time over the environment. "Viable" alternatives include train, coach, and ship. 3: Commuting All of these pictures show a way off commuting to work, school, etc. Starting with the bicycle, it is a great way to keep fit, and to start your day by exercising a bit. But it is slower than all the other ways to get to your destination. The second picture is of an automobile. It is one of the most wasteful and inefficient ways of transporting people. It requires a lot of space to store, and you don't use all of its capacity while commuting. The third and fourth picture show the inside and the outside of a tram. It is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly way of commuting fast. The downsides which are not present in the previous two ways of commuting is that the tram is on a fixed track, and it has predefined stops. The fifth picture shows a bus. It has the advantages of the car (i.e. the stops can be changed by the transport authority) and the advantages of the tram. The last picture shows an underground railway (metro, subway). It has the advantages of the tram and the bus, and the advantage of not being stuck in traffic like the rest. The disadvantage of the metro is that you can't even change the layout like how you can do with the rest to a degree. XXth lesson, 2026/01/08: StB: 69/3: The main methods of commuting in the region I live in are usually going by car, taking the bus, and travelling by train. People from bigger towns than mine have the benefit of a better connection to the rail network in Hungary. I do have friends whom commute by train instead of the other options since it's way more convenient and faster for them than taking the bus or driving. The way I prefer to commute would be travelling by moped or other small-displacement motorcycles or scooters. But that's only viable to travel with in summer since the roads are too dangerous in the other three seasons. But if I had to choose I'd go with travelling by bus since the bus network in my region is well-developed. Speaking of travelling by bus, it is usually the most reliable way to commute from my experience. But it might be reliable but it could still be late in winter. Taking public transport is the way to go in my opinion, since commuting by car is the least efficient way to move people. Also it has the disadvantage of needing a large chuck of space to be made into a car park, which could be better used by buses which can move more than ten times the people at once. I don't think banning cars would be a good move, but maybe banning them from centain areas (i.e. city centres et.al.) would be beneficial, since people could still commute by bus, tram, trolleybus and friends. 47th lesson, 2026/01/10: 48th lesson, 2026/01/15: StB: 54-55: 2: 1: Wholegrain 2: starchy 3: fresh 4: low 5: sugary 6: Carbonated 7: lean 8: unsaturated 9: oily 10: semi-skimmed 4: 1: nutritional 2: preservatives 3: ready 3: ingredients 4: tooth 5: cutting down 6: going on 7: 1: high fever 2: swollen tonsils 3: sudden weight loss 4: splitting headache 5: high/low blood pressure 6: itchy rash 7: upset stomach 8: abdominal pain 51st lesson, 2026/01/16: common illnesses: In this 55th lesson, 2026/01/29: StB: 54/1, 55/15 StB: 58/2,3 text opinion: 2: In my opinion, weightlifting is a good way to ease children into working out, as probably most children have probably heard about famous weightlifters and they might also become motivated enough to try for themselves. But that is not a good way to actually do it since they can easily hurt themselves if they don't have proper safety precautions and/or good form. Actually, kids have been "weightlifting" for a while, especially when they help their parents to carry groceries for example. 3: This piece of text does bring up a good point about the (un)healthy diets of teenagers. In my opinion, most teenagers eat relatively healthy today. But there might be a minority of whom might eat unhealthy. From what I've seen, Gen Z teenagers frequently eat out at fast food restaurants. I think eating fast food by itself is not unhealthy, if done in moderation. 56th lesson, 2026/02/02: Reported speech: StB: 58/1, 123: 1: 1: Chris apologized to Vanessa that he hadn't remembered to buy the tomatoes. 2: Sam wondered if Peter had added sugar to Sam's coffee. 3: His mum asked Jack to go to the supermarket after school and buy some eggs. 4: Ruth doubted whether Elena had seen them at the café. 5: The teacher told Sally that she had to hand in her essay by 16:00, today. 6: Jenny asked Ben if he would tell her if he heard anything. 124/1-3: 1: 1: She had said that she had bought an amazing new MP3 player. 2: He had said that he was testing a new video game. 3: They said that they hadn't used a calculator to solve these maths problems. 4: Sarah had told me that she would reply to my email the following day. 5: Ben would say that he hadn't left the house since the day before. 6: She had asked John why he hadn't answered her calls. 2: 1: He had bought her the headphones when she asked. 2: She asked Tom if he would meet her after work. 3: Rick asked me whether I was angry with him. 4: He asked them why they hadn't switched off the computer. 5: She asked us what we were doing. 6: They asked him if he could repair their plane. 3: 1: He asked me if I had watched the TV programme about inventors the night before. 2: She asked John why he wasn't answering her calls. 3: Sophie asked her mother if she was happy with her new tablet. 4: He asked me if I could help him with his homework. 5: They asked him whether he had decided where to go on holiday. 6: He asked her who would be responsible for this project. 125/4-7: 5: 1: to leave 2: --- 3: to read 4: should write 5: watching 6: not taking 7: not to go 6: 1: persuaded 2: reassured 3: warned 4: 7: 1: She recommended getting a new camera. 2: The teacher forbade using the science lab at lunchtime. 3: She congratulated passing the driving test. 4: I confessed to eating their sandwich. 5: He promised to buy a new bag for them tomorrow. 6: He invited me to come to that science show with him. 7: She refused to drive me to college that day. 57th lesson, 2026/02/05: StB: 59/1-4: 1: 1: 1. --- 2. blindness 3. hearing loss/deaf 4. --- 2: challenging 3: run, read, listen 2: 1: mobility scooter, ramps, carer, stairlift 2: Braille, carer, text-reading software, guide dog, cane 3: hearing aid, carer, subtitles, sign language 4: carer, therapist StB: 60/5: Coping with exam stress
